Why natural scented candles are a better choice

Of the five senses, I find smell is the most nostalgic. It can transport me to a moment in time – recalling feelings, places and memories. A scent has the power to lift my spirits, calm my anxieties and bring me immense comfort. The scent of Bal à Versailles by Jean Desprez is the fragrance I wore on my wedding day, and just one waft still has the power to recall the joy I felt in that moment.

Scenting a space is therefore a detail that has always been important to me. Whether I’m entertaining or simply relaxing at home, I love walking into a room to be met by a smell – be it fresh flowers or a flickering candle. I have noticed some recent discussion in the press about the toxicity of certain candles, so I wanted to explain a little more about what sets Daylesford and Bamford’s home fragrance collections apart.

As with everything we craft, we prioritise sustainable practices without compromising on the quality of any of our products. All our candles are hand poured in the UK using a 100% natural, non-toxic wax blend of renewable vegetable waxes and natural beeswax. Every wick is made from pure cotton – free from lead or any other toxins. Trimming it carefully after each burn will help ensure the candle burns evenly, cleanly and without soot.

Every Daylesford and Bamford fragrance is inspired by nature and is crafted using the highest percentage of natural fragrance oils possible – and Daylesford’s cosy Log Fire candle and Bamford’s Geranium and B Silent candles are 100% natural from wax to wick. I feel proud that we have achieved 100% recyclable packaging across our range, helping to reduce our environmental footprint. Both our kilner jars and beautiful ceramic vessels are also designed to be reused long after the candle has burned away. I love keeping them for brushes on my dressing table, jams in the kitchen – or even for potting snowdrops or geraniums into.

As ever, there is always more we can do, so my businesses remain committed to improving our formulas and practices wherever possible. For more information, I would encourage you to read this great, informative piece in The Telegraph.

I hope you can feel reassured that a Daylesford or Bamford candle is a more mindful choice – and a beautiful gift to give to a loved one. If you would like to discover some of my favourite scents of the season and enjoy a little tour of the farmshop’s home fragrance room, please click here.
