Farming | Food | Sustainability
October was a busy month on the farm, with seasonal jobs ranging from cider making, squash harvesting and egg collecting to honey spinning, leaf clearing and tending to our beautiful organic livestock – both in the Cotswolds and on our estate up in Staffordshire.
It ended with the government’s autumn budget announcement, which left farming communities all over the country with much to digest. These communities are the stewards of our landscape – working with nature, wildlife and our animals to deliver the food systems each one of us relies on every day.
It is therefore disheartening to read about some of the planned cuts to DEFRA and inheritance tax measures that may well jeopardise the future for two thirds of smaller family farms across Britain.
Despite this, I welcome the government’s renewed commitment to the Environmental Land Management scheme. While there is more to be done to make access to the scheme even easier, nurturing nature has always been at the heart of all we do at Daylesford, so measures that encourage others to work regeneratively are a step in the right direction.
